Visit Indre Østfold - Boat trips in the summer

Join us on an adventurous journey through the Halden Canal this summer!

The Halden Canal is Norway's oldest canal, built in 1852 - 1860. In the Halden Canal there is Norway's largest steamboat environment, and Europe's highest continuous lock staircase, Brekke at 27 meters. Over the years, a total of 25 steamboats have travelled the Halden Canal, six of these old steamboats are still in the canal.

The Halden Canal offers both route and charter trips with food and drinks during the summer season. On the journey through the Halden Canal you get to experience what Norwegian nature has to offer. Large lakes, narrow canals, tall locks, open meadows and beautiful woods. If you are lucky you can see both beaver and osprey.

DS Turisten is the queen of the Halden Canal. DS Turisten was built to carry passengers and goods between Tistedal and Skulerud, with a total of 11 points of call. The trip took approx. 9 hours, and it eventually became an attractive tour by train from Oslo to Halden, then by boat to Skulerud to finally take the train from Skulerud back to Oslo.

The boat was in active service from 1887 to 1963, and the boat was sunk in Femsjøen in 1967. The boat was located in 1994 and later raised. Stay long in Tistedal for restoration of the hull. Later transferred to the yard for complete restoration to the original condition. After 12 years of expert restoration to tens of millions of dollars, the boat was back in the canal in 2009. The ship received a fantastic reception at the return to the watercourse. After 30 years at Femsjøen's bottom and 12 years during expert restoration to tens of millions of dollars, the steamship was ready for a new era.

The DS Tourist runs some days during the summer season. The tour with DS Turisten is very popular, so be sure to book your ticket early. DS Turisten can also be chartered for a hike on the Halden Canal. Set a very special framework and atmosphere around your event - be it corporate parties, company, anniversary, weddings and more.
