The Halden Canal is the oldest of the two canals in Norway, measuring 8 miles from Skulerud in Akershus in the north to Tistedal in Østfold in the south. The canal is a great tourist attraction with its beautiful and partly unspoilt nature and invites you to great experiences for young and old!

The Halden Canal is a special cultural heritage, and in recent years the canal has been set in good condition so that you can now travel from north to south, and pass through three lock points and five lakes. There are many great experiences in and along the canal. Here you can swim, fish, eat, experience art and culture, live and experience the great nature.

 

In the Halden Canal you can experience three lock locations with a total of 9 lock chambers. During the summer you can enjoy the canal by joining the journey through Europe's highest continuous lock staircase - Brekke locks, with its 27 height meters. In Strømsfoss you can shop and enjoy the cozy café Møllerens Hus and at Ørje you can enjoy a good meal at Båtcafeen during the summer season, and at Bakergården the rest of the year. Ørje also has Norway's largest collection of steamboats at the Canal Museum. At the Canal Museum you can learn more about the history and wildlife around. Also, visit the summer-opened tourist information office and get great tips and ideas on what to do while in the area.

There are many events and festivals along the canal and in the surrounding areas. Soot-spelet in the locks amphitheater at Ørje has becomes an annual tradition. The game is about the channel builder Engebret Soot and is played every year in late June. Secure your ticket well in advance so that you do not miss the fantastic performance in the unique locker environment at Ørje! At Ørje you can experience "Lørdag i slusene" every Saturday in the summer. Slusefestivalen and the Canal Games are also arranged every summer. In Strømsfoss you can experience Strømsfossdagen, and at Skulerud you can experience the old railway environment. In Halden you can experience historic Fredriksten Fortress, "Allsang" and everything else the city has to offer. And at Bjørkelangen you can experience the venerable goods at Eidsverket.

 

On the Halden Canal, you travel through scenic areas. You can both enjoy the silence or experience more action-packed activities. There are, among other things, rich opportunities for angling and other nature experiences. You can rent canoes in several places or choose to bring your own. If you want to bring your leisure boat up in the canal, we can help you with the boat lift or you can use many of the launch ramp along the canal. There are 13 guest bridges along the canal from Skulerud in the north to Tistedal in the south.

 

There are different kinds og accomondation in the region. For example, you can rent one of the coastal huts along the canal, sleep in boarding houses, camping or hotels. Almost nature comes if you choose to live out in the countryside. A total of 18 nature shelter are at your disposal. They are free and for free use - first come first served.
