Join us on a journey through the Halden Canal from north to south

For those who like to travel in the wild, the Halden Canal and the area around this is an excellent destination. “Villlmarksveien” meanders along lakes, rivers, ponds, through open cultural landscapes, into the covert forest's mysterious atmosphere.

 

Skulerud - Tjuvholmen ca. 18 km

Start in Skulerud. Here's Smithy, a cottage you can spend first night in. Can be booked on www.oslofjorden.org if you want more comfort we can recommend Eidsverket in Aurskog Holand or Rømskog Spa & Resort. From Skulerud you paddle / ride your bikes down to Tjuvholmen in Marker. Great recreational area with nice beach. Here one can spend the night in a shelter.

 

 

(Kroksund bridge - Sæterøy - 1 km. at the stretch Skulerud - Tjuvholmen you will pass Sæterøy. If you want a short trip we recomend you start your trip at Kroksund bridge  and padle to Sæterøy. Here there are several shelters - and several places to put your tent up. 

 

 

Tjuvholmen - Ørje - ca. 16 km
Continue to the lock town Ørje -  a cozy village with lots of charm. You can enjoy a meal on the Boat cafe - idyllically located practically in the Halden Canal. The Halden Canal Museum is located south of the locks, a center for adventure, activity and knowledge. In Ørje you can spend the night at Solstrand Terrasse, or in one of the two bivouacs found in the Ørje river.

Ørje - Strømsfoss ca. 24 km

The following day the journey continues south towards Strømsfoss, where you will find a fun old-fashioned general store, Strømsfoss mill and the Millers house that has both dining and retail of clothing, gifts mm. Here you can spend the night in the "flag cabin", located north of the city center or in the "barn" in the center of Strømsfoss. Both bookable at www.oslofjorden.org Two shelters is also at "Tangen" in the center and one at Skjæra further south. Kirkeng Camping has cabins for rent.

 

 

Strømsfoss - Halden ca. 37 km

The next day you can experience Brekke locks that have Northern Europe's highest lift height of approximately 27 meters. There are shelters by Brekke locks, and Fløter cabin (last booked at www.oslofjorden.ord), or you can head on to Halden where there are many sorts of accomodations. Experience the fortress that has many different events during the summer.If you arrive by canoe you must travel by road the last part from Tistedalen, where the channel ends. Take a walk around the Halden city and enjoy a meal at the pier. Halden Tistedal ca. 3 km.
