Unique locations for special occasions - in Gamlebyen

Gamlebyen is the most intact and well preserved fortified town of its sort in Europe. The Norwegian defence, Forsvaret, have lived here side by side with civilians for over 350 years and stand out from other fortified towns, being a town with citizens living in it. This gives a unique opportunity for a historical frame around your venue.

After the soldiers marched out of Gamlebyen, the Department of National Fortification Heritage´s main job has been to preserve this cultural heritage. In all, Forsvarsbygg is in charge of approximately one third of the buildings, as well as all the ramparts. The rest is owned by the local council or are privately owned.

To keep a building in use is the best form of preservation. This is why The Norwegian Defence Estates Agency rent out their buildings for weddings, events, birthdays and conferences. You can celebrate your wedding in the very distinguished "Det Af Graastein Grunnmurede Provianthus", the oldest building in Gamlebyen. It comes with a guaranteed historical ambiance.

In Tøihuset you will find two large rooms, Bombardersalen and the newly renovated Tøihussalen, available for parties and meetings. They are placed next to the apple garden and can easily be combined. Månefestivalen, The Moon Festival, is a versatile festival with a green profile which is arranged the last weekend of July every year. The festival takes place in National Fortification Heritage´s venues, in the south of The Old Town. The festival is set up with a stage on Tøihusplassen with an international scale. They also take care of Artellierigårdsplassen and Tøihusplassen, both used for large size concerts and events.

The grand Kommandantgården has been the residence of Fredrikstad’s commandant for more than 200 years. Now it is possible to rent the building for venues and parties with up to 50 guests. Here you can celebrate your birthday or wedding in majestic and scenic surroundings. The courtyard has its own garden and courtyard available for the guests. In the courtyard is also Bryggerhuset, with space for 16 people and wood for the fireplace is included.

The Norwegian Defence Estates Agency also rents out office spaces in buildings like Artillerigården and Ingeniørgården, where small and large businesses work.
