The House of Literature in Fredrikstad

Iconic building with lots to offer

The reflection of Litteraturhuset, The House of Literature, can practically be seen as a mirror in the river Glomma with its bustling life right on the harbour outside and with music, literature, conferences, dining and bar inside.

Large windows cover this beautiful building which houses the second largest house of literature in Norway. The windows make it open and welcoming to visitors but at the same time warm and intimate. Here you can indulge in interesting conversations in deep comfortable sofas, take part in large conferences, enjoy concerts, listen to book talks and political debates or just bring the children to child friendly events.

If you wish to organise a large event it is possible to use the whole building and in privacy use the meeting rooms on the first and second floor for the main events, enjoy the aperitif on the roof terrace with its view over the whole city and enjoy the dinner at the restaurant Fabel, known for its gourmet kitchen, on the ground floor. While you still enjoy full privacy, the town with all it has to offer is right outside the door, be it shopping, dining or the free ferry to the picturesque Gamlebyen.

Many well known personalities have been guests on the stage. Amongst them you will find names like John Irving, Timbuktu, Magnus Grønneberg, Åsne Seierstad, DOK-festivalene, poetry festivals, Fredrikstadkonferansen and many more. With what might well be the city´s best technical stage solutions, you are guaranteed a good experience.

Here you will find room for everything from a meeting for two people, to many hundreds in seminars that last for days or weddings and parties. With over two hundred events every year the House of Literature is a place for literature, debates and knowledge for young and old.

Many of the events are free of charge and with some you will need to buy a ticket. As a foundation the house does its best to keep the prices down to make it easier to visit often. For future events check out the website.
