Fredrikstad celebrates 450 years

Fredrikstad celebrates all year

All through 2017 Fredrikstad will celebrate being 450 years. Large and small activities and events will take place and both culture, the arts, sports, exhibitions and public talks are on the calendar. The official celebrations will take place in September and last for 11 days.

The whole city and hundreds of participants have come together to celebrate and cooperate on small and large events all through the year. Some of the events are arranged by the municipality and many of them by the local organisations.

Irene Østby, the project manager of the city’s anniversary tells us: "Frederikfesten, the Fredrik Party, the official main event is an extended version of the former Frederiks dag, and this year it will last from the 7th - September. There will be activities and events for everyone throughout the celebrations and the Literature Festival, Ord i Grenseland, is part of the celebrations with its own unique program. There is also a reunion with the newly refurbished version of Byoperetten, the city opera."

9th September the event Møteplass 2017 takes place in Kirkeparken, coordinated by KorLuren. This is a meeting place between different cultures, with dialogue meetings, activities in the park where you amongst other things can experience Somalian dance alongside the traditional Norwegian fiddle, hardingfele, and many other activities. This day you will also find several activities and events in Gamlebyen and the same evening there is the grand anniversary concert at Tollbodplassen with Tommy Tokyo & De Bipolare, CC Cowboys and Aunt Mary.

September 12th is the actual birthday of our town. Many great activities and events are planned for this day. Among other things you can experience the sound and light installation "Lucid Dream" with Nils-Petter Molvær and Beate Schüler near 2.dam at Fredrikstadmarka. In the library Det Norske blåseensamblet play along to the vampire classic "Nosferatu" from 1922 that will be showed on big screen. There will also be a long table set in the city centre with shrimps, where people from all over the world contribute with bread from their culture. A long table where we gather and celebrate together from places all over the world.

In cooperation with Østfold culture development the municipality have invited the renowned Cirkus Cirkör with the spectacular and thought provoking show "Limits" to play at Blå Grotte from 14th Septmeber. This day the third biggest ship in the world, the Russian ship, MIR, also sails into the harbour.

"The huge success the cultural night, Kulturnatt, where all the different cultural and artisan projects in town will be visible through a whole night is held on the 15th of September. There will amongst other things be a large youth scene at Flesketorget, concert with Det Norske blåseensamblet in Domkirken, a Marathon concert in the library, and so many events it´s impossible to name them all, but everything is free of charge", Østby tells us, she talks fast and adds: "Saturday 16th September is the day of retail and the many shopping outlets all over Fredrikstad and Gamlebyen offer activities and events. Sunday the 17th September there will be children’s activities at Isegran, large mass in Domkirken, concert in Glemmen church and FFK-game as some of the activities".

The sports are not forgotten. The opening of the anniversary was held in cooperation with Fredrikstad Winter Classic in January. On the 19th August we are ready for Idrettsfesten 450, the sports fests, with four gigantic sports events: World Champinship in sailing at Hankø, Norwegian Champinship in bow and arrow in Gamlebyen, Jackon Triatlon in the city centre and the bicycle ride, Ladies Tour of Norway. There will be a hot spot arena at Tollbodplassen to gather the whole event with dining and result. TV2 will have live coverage from this event.

"These are just a few of the things happening through this year of celebrations", the project manager finishes. "Make sure you see: Tweed Run, the musical about Hans Nielsen Hauge, book publications, the launch of our anniversary post stamp, festivals and small and large events. Follow us on our web sites and Facebook for updated information and program through out the year and for the main event Frederikfesten from the 7th to the September."
