Next to the port is Gamlebyen - the old city - which is the best preserved fortress town in Northern Europe. This old part of the city of Fredrikstad is filled with vibrant history, cobblestone streets, small wooden houses, unique boutiques, cafés, restaurants, galleries, and museums. Here you can stroll along the ramparts, feed the ducks and goats or just sit down on a bench and suck in the relaxing atmosphere.

If you seek more excitement or adventure you can take a small river cruise with one of the free city-ferries to the lively centre and pay a visit to the quayside promenade of the inner city of Fredrikstad.

The cities of Halden and Sarpsborg are only a short bus ride away, along the famous Ancient trail. Here you can explore Norway`s most concentrated collection of cluster and ancient monuments dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age. This area is also filled to the brim with beautiful peaceful landscape for outdoor activities like hikes and bicycle rides as both the streets and nature is full of history.

The Halden Canal is a well-kept secret tucked away along the Swedish border, enjoy a beautiful canal boat tour in Scandinavia’s oldest and highest locks. Meet the majestic Fredriksten Fortress which has protected Norways borderline for almost 500 years. Fredriksten Fortress has been blitzed but never beaten and still stands as proud as ever. Today this is a beautiful and stunning bastion with an amazing view over the city of Halden, the fjord and over to Sweden.

In close proximity to Fredrikstad, you can choose a full day excursion to Oslo, Norway’s vibrant capital. Allowing the cruiseliners to save time, cost and the environment.
