Fortified Fredrikstad

Fredrikstad is situated by the river Glomma, which runs through to the Oslo fjord.

Fredrikstad was founded by King Fredrik 2 in 1567. Fredrikstad accommodates Norway’s fifth largest population, with  close to 75 000 people.

Gamlebyen is the best preserved fortress town in the whole of Scandinavia and definitely worth a visit. It is North Europe’s best preserved fortress town. Here you can take a stroll along the old, narrow cobbled streets. They will take you past shops which designer goods, art and craft and other curiosities. When you have finished exploring Gamlebyen, why not take the ferry over to the centre of Fredrikstad. Here you will find a shopping centre, market square and a range of shops located in a pedestrian zone.

Before the Oil Age, Fredrikstad was a prominent city in terms of producing and developing products, such as ships. Fredrikstad mekaniske verksted (FMV) was one of the front runners in creating ships in Northern Europe before it was sold off to local merchants.

It's a short drive to the islands of Hvaler, where you can visit all the little island gems. Visit Fredrikstad and Hvaler can show you how.
